Item Description
A Stunning Late 18th-Century George III Period Mahogany Canterbury, or Magazine Rack, of Exceptional Quality and Elegant Proportions
This finely crafted piece features four solid saddle top mahogany dividers, beautifully accented with delicate ebony inlay throughout. The shorter side incorporates a deep, mahogany lined drawer, fitted with a pair of turned brass knob handles, offering practical storage while maintaining a refined profile. Additional brass knob handles to each end allow for ease of movement and add a further decorative highlight.
Raised on tall, slender turned legs with the original brass castors, this Canterbury moves gracefully and stands with poise. Made in England circa 1790, it remains in very good condition: structurally sound, with firm joints and all the reassuring integrity one expects from the finest 18th-century craftsmanship.
Most notably, the surfaces remain delightfully unrestored, retaining the original finish and a superb, warm patina to the mahogany. Pieces of this age and quality, preserved in such authentic condition, are increasingly difficult to find. The rich colour, depth of tone, and gentle signs of age give it a timeless allure and a palpable sense of history.
Equally at home in a traditional period interior or as a statement piece in a contemporary setting, this George III Canterbury offers both function and character, a distinguished focal point for any discerning collector or stylish home.
