Item Description

Superb Tall William IV Period Figured Oak Open Library Bookcase, C1830

An exceptional early 19th-century William IV period tall open library bookcase in solid figured oak, of impressive depth and elegant proportions. England, circa 1830.
The bookcase is constructed in two main sections for ease of transport and access. The upper section features a moulded cornice above a pair of open compartments, fitted with eight fully adjustable shelves. The lower section is enclosed by beautifully figured oak panelled doors, opening to reveal a further two adjustable shelves, and is raised on an integral moulded plinth base.
The golden solid oak has acquired a rich, warm, honeyed patina, highlighting the figure of the timber and attesting to both the piece’s quality and its careful stewardship over nearly two centuries. William IV bookcases are renowned for their combination of presence and refinement, often executed in dense, high-quality oak, and this example exemplifies that tradition.
Condition is excellent, with the original surfaces presenting a deep, lustrous finish and only the minor, sympathetic signs of age expected in a well-preserved piece of this period. The overall effect is of a grand yet understated bookcase that serves equally well as a working library piece and a focal point in a sophisticated interior. A superb example of early 19th-century craftsmanship and classic William IV design.
