Item Description
Pair of 19th Century Victorian Pitch Pine Glastonbury Armchairs
*Lovely Colour and Patina – England, circa 1880*
A striking pair of late 19th-century Victorian Glastonbury armchairs in pitch pine, dating from around 1880 and offered in excellent original condition.
These highly decorative Gothic revival armchairs display a wonderful aged patina, with the pitch pine showing a fine, lively grain and warm caramel tones. Each chair features a square panelled back, bold shaped arms with a graceful serpentine profile, and attractive trefoil-pierced fretwork that enhances their ecclesiastical character.
The flat seat is neatly recessed within the frame at a comfortable height of 46cm, making them practical as well as sculptural. The distinctive X-form square section legs and broad pegged joints create a fascinating silhouette while testifying to the quality of their construction. The solid frames, sound joints and crisp details all reflect superb Victorian craftsmanship.
With their rich colour and patina, these Glastonbury armchairs are ideal as statement pieces in a hall, study, library or living room, and work equally well in both traditional and more eclectic interiors. A decorative and functional pair, full of character and historic charm.
