A Handsome Late Georgian William IV Mahogany High-Back Wing Armchair
A superb late Georgian, early William IV period high-back wing armchair in finely carved solid mahogany, very much in the manner of Gillows and of true country house quality. Of notably generous proportions, this imposing library or drawing room chair combines outstanding comfort with refined early 19th-century elegance.
The high back with shapely wings and out-scrolling arm supports creates a wonderfully enveloping silhouette, while the beautifully carved show frame displays rich colour and a well-polished patina. The mahogany is detailed with reeded mouldings and elegant carved scroll ends, giving the chair great presence and a graceful, flowing profile.
It stands on tall, turned and reeded front legs, each retaining its original brass castors, with tapering outswept rear supports ensuring excellent stability. The frame is in excellent structural condition throughout, with no loose joints.
Recently reupholstered in a luxurious ivory damask, the armchair is classically finished and fitted with a loose, hand-stitched deep feather-filled squab cushion for exceptional comfort. The generous seat and high supportive back make it ideal for extended reading or relaxation. Seat height: 55 cm.
A fine and well-drawn country house library or drawing room wing chair, this piece is an excellent example of early 19th-century English craftsmanship.
