Item Description
A large scale, late 19th century bronze figure of Donatello's David, most probably produced by the Italian firm of Chiaruzzi. David depicted with sword in hand, stands victorious upon the severed head of Goliath. This bronze is finely cast, with the most beautiful verdigris patination, in very good condition, a wonderful and rare grand tour figure.
Donatello`s bronze statue of David was produced around 1440 and is his most famous work. Noted as the first unsupported bronze figure of the Renaissance period, it caused a sensation when first shown, due to its portrayal of a nude young David, it now resides in the Bargello, Florence.
