Item Description

A wonderful pair, of large scale, late 19th century terracotta garden urns by James Stiff and Sons. Of campagna form, with egg and dart rim, the main bowl with flowing grape and vine decoration and bold handles depicting the Green man, a symbol of regrowth or rebirth, stamped 'James Stiff And Sons Lambeth'. In generally good condition, one handle repaired.

English circa 1870

James Stiff

James worked for a short while as an apprentice at Coade, from 1826 until around 1830, when he moved to Doulton as a mould maker. In 1843 he set up his own business in Ferry Street, Lambeth, his sons joining him in 1863, the business finally closing in 1912 and was sold shortly afterward to Royal Doulton. James Stiff wares are very reminiscent of Doulton, in their colour, quality and style and if not stamped, it's very hard to tell the difference.
