Item Description

Wonderful example of a mid 18th century Rushnip, the rush, which had been dipped in wax, was nipped in the clamp, so, therefore rush nip, the earliest form of candle.
The existence of Rushnip’s go back to ancient Egypt but were particularly popular in the United Kingdom in the 1700's as they were exempt from the candle tax of 1709, and being a staple in most working class homes right up to the turn of the 20th century then having a resurgence in WW2.
At 25 cm high, 7cm in width with a base circumference of 23 cm.
The fruitwood base has a crack to one side but an ancient crack and is rock hard, a lovely colour and the swirl on the handle a handsome flourish.
