A cast plaster bust of Venus de Milo, or Aphrodite of Melos, after the antique
This plaster copy is in good condition commensurate with age.
French or Italian, mid 19th century.
The marble sculpture of Venus, thought to be 2nd century BC, was discovered in 1820 on the island of Milos in Greece, and which has been displayed in the Louvre Museum in Paris since 1821.
Venus the goddess of love in Roman mythology, she was the ancestor of the Roman people through her son, Aeneas, who survived the fall of Troy and fled to Italy. The Romans adapted the myths and iconography of her Greek counterpart Aphrodite for Roman art and Latin literature. In the later classical tradition of the West, Venus became one of the most widely referenced deities of Greco-Roman mythology as the embodiment of love.
