Item Description
A LSWR Railway sign
Rectangular cast iron sign, painted in capital lettering and reading ‘SHUT THIS GATE’ to a green ground. The paint has flaked with age. There are four mounting holes.
English, circa 1910-1920
The London and South Western Railway (LSWR) was a railway company in England from 1838 to 1922. The LSWR became famous for its express passenger trains from London to Bournemouth and Weymouth, and to Devon and Cornwall. Many railway lines crisscrossed England in the height of the steam locomotive, these signs were attached to the access gates across the tracks.
