Introduction
A richly atmospheric Victorian landscape by **Stephen Enoch Hogley (1842-1927)** depicting Borrowdale in the English Lake District.
The painting has considerable decorative presence, combining a warm, sophisticated landscape palette with an ornate period gilt frame.
Golden ochres and russet browns run through the foreground alongside olive and deeper forest greens. These warm earth colours transition towards blue-grey and muted violet across the distant mountains, while creams and pale blues animate the cloud-filled sky.
The result is a landscape that works particularly well within traditional, country-house and layered contemporary interiors.

Catalogue Note
A farmer and cattle animate the foreground and provide scale against the wider Borrowdale landscape.
Hogley's brushwork shifts noticeably through the composition. The immediate landscape contains shorter descriptive touches, while pasture and woodland are increasingly broadly painted through the middle distance.
Across the mountains, the paint handling softens further, allowing the fells to dissolve naturally into atmospheric haze. Loose sweeping passages across the sky complement this movement from detail towards atmosphere.
The possible presence of **Glaramara or part of the Glaramara massif** gives the painting additional topographical interest, although the individual fell identification remains provisional.
Borrowdale
Borrowdale's combination of pastoral valley scenery and dramatic mountain forms made it an enduring subject for British landscape painters.
Hogley emphasises this contrast particularly effectively: the intimate scale of farmer and cattle is set against the much greater mass of the Cumberland fells.
The Artist
Yorkshire-born Stephen Enoch Hogley trained under Peace Sykes and studied drawing at the Holmfirth Mechanics' Institution.
He specialised in landscapes in oil and watercolour and became particularly associated with rural and mountainous subjects incorporating cattle and warm natural light.
Hogley later served on the council of the Yorkshire Union of Artists and exhibited beyond Yorkshire during his career.
