Large Victorian Oil Painting of Daniel in the Lions' Den Attributed to Isaac Findler, Dated 1881

A wonderfully atmospheric Victorian oil painting on canvas depicting the biblical story of *Daniel in the Lions' Den*, attributed to the Staffordshire artist Isaac Findler (1809–1888) and dated 1881.

The composition shows Daniel seated amongst lions within a dramatic woodland landscape, illuminated against a dark and richly painted background. His striking crimson robe provides a wonderful focal point, contrasting beautifully with the earthy tones and shadowed surroundings. The result is a painting with tremendous presence, depth and character.

Executed in oil on canvas, the work captures the enduring biblical narrative of faith, courage and divine protection. The artist's use of light and shade creates a powerful sense of atmosphere, while the calm expression of Daniel contrasts effectively with the surrounding lions, drawing the viewer into the scene.

Isaac Findler was a Staffordshire artist known for his landscapes and religious subjects. A related depiction of *Daniel in the Lions' Den* painted by Findler in 1846 is held in the Staffordshire County Museum, demonstrating the artist's long-standing interest in this subject. The present example is signed lower left and dated 1881, although part of the inscription is obscured by the frame. The painting is therefore offered as attributed to Isaac Findler.

Condition

The canvas has been relined and remains stable. There is age-related craquelure, minor surface wear and light imperfections consistent with age. The frame displays expected age-related wear. Overall, the painting presents beautifully and has excellent decorative impact.
