Item Description

Antique Victorian Malachite Brooch c.1865 – Greek Key Enamel Neoclassical Revival Jewellery
An exquisite example of Victorian Neoclassical Revival design — this mid-19th century brooch combines refined craftsmanship, symbolic beauty, and timeless charm. A perfect heirloom or Christmas gift for the collector of fine antique jewellery.
Description
Offered by Cheshire Antiques Consultant Ltd, this superb Victorian circular brooch, crafted circa 1865, exemplifies the elegance and symbolism of the Neoclassical Revival period.
At its centre is a richly banded domed cabochon-cut malachite gemstone, polished to a smooth, high-domed finish. The natural swirling pattern displays shades from deep emerald to soft mint green — the hallmarks of fine-quality malachite. In Victorian symbolism, malachite represented protection, prosperity, and vitality.
Surrounding the stone is a gilded brass (pinchbeck) mount, beautifully detailed with a black enamel Greek key (meander) motif, symbolising eternity and unity. A finely engraved gold-toned inner border enhances the contrast between the vibrant green gemstone and dark enamel, showcasing the refined craftsmanship of the era.
Entirely handcrafted, the brooch retains its original C-clasp and elongated pin stem, and its soft antique patina adds to its authenticity and enduring beauty.

Historical Significance
This brooch beautifully expresses the Victorian fascination with classical antiquity, inspired by ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture. The Greek key motif, a popular mid-19th-century decorative element, symbolised infinity and eternal flow — values highly regarded in Neoclassical design.
Malachite, mined primarily in Russia’s Ural Mountains during the Victorian period, was prized for its rich banding and believed protective qualities. Its use in this piece demonstrates both aesthetic appreciation and symbolic intent, creating a jewel that embodies art, meaning, and refinement.
