Item Description

Decorative Pair of 19th Century Belgian Pastoral Animal Paintings by Franz van Severdonck
Overview
A beautifully composed pair of mid-19th century Belgian oil paintings on panel, depicting peaceful pastoral scenes with sheep, lambs, goat, cattle and ducks.
These works offer a classic “Old World” aesthetic, combining traditional rural subject matter with a soft, natural palette—ideal for both period and contemporary interiors.
Subject and Medium
Oil on panel. Each painting presents a pastoral landscape populated with livestock, including sheep, lambs, goat, cattle and poultry, set within open countryside.
Composition & Technique
The compositions are calm, balanced, and highly decorative, designed to work as a true companion pair.
One scene shows a ewe resting with two lambs, accompanied by a standing goat and a duck in the foreground. The second painting depicts a ewe with lamb alongside a reclining sheep, again with a duck completing the rural setting.
The colour palette is soft and harmonious throughout:
Warm creams and soft whites define the sheep
Rich brown tones add contrast and depth
Muted greens and earthy tones form the landscape
Gentle blue sky introduces light and atmosphere
The animals are rendered with a natural, understated expression, giving the scenes a peaceful and timeless quality. Brushwork is controlled and detailed, particularly in the texture of the wool and foliage.
Historical Context
Belgian animal painting of the 19th century was highly regarded, particularly through the influence of Eugène Verboeckhoven. Works such as these were created for decorative interiors and continue to suit that purpose today.
