King William III in Royal State Robes, Early 18th Century

A commanding early 18th century British oil portrait of King William III (1650-1702), painted after the celebrated royal portraiture of Sir Godfrey Kneller, Principal Painter to the Crown.

William is shown bust-length within an oval composition, wearing magnificent royal state robes, an ermine-lined mantle, elaborate falling lace cravat and the ceremonial Collar of the Order of the Garter with the suspended Great George.

The portrait has tremendous decorative presence. The King's pale features and long dark allonge periwig emerge dramatically from the restrained background, while the warm golden-brown mantle, ivory lace, ermine and rich Garter insignia provide colour and texture.

Presented within a substantial decorative gilt frame, the overall dimensions of approximately 104 x 86 cm make this an impressive statement piece for a period or contemporary interior.

The portrait is conservatively catalogued as "After Sir Godfrey Kneller", recognising its close relationship with Kneller's established representations of William III while making no claim that it was painted personally by Kneller or within his studio.

Historical Context

Sir Godfrey Kneller was the pre-eminent portrait painter of the late Stuart and early Georgian courts and portrayed successive British monarchs including William III and Mary II, Queen Anne and George I.

The considerable demand for royal imagery resulted in successful Kneller portrait types being repeated and adapted by his studio, followers and later British painters.

Conservation

The portrait was professionally examined and conserved in 2026.

Examination confirmed that the canvas had been historically lined. Extensive age-related craquelure and areas of previous overpainting were recorded, particularly within the dark background. UV fluorescence examination formed part of the professional assessment.

Conservation treatment included surface cleaning, selective removal of the removable upper varnish, filling of localised losses, sympathetic retouching, conservation varnishing and securing the canvas to its strainer.

An older discoloured varnish layer was deliberately retained following professional assessment where safe removal was considered impracticable.

The painting is accompanied by a professional Condition Report, Treatment Report and photographic conservation record.

Condition

Presented in professionally conserved historic condition consistent with its considerable age.

The historically lined canvas displays extensive craquelure, including areas of raised cracking, together with previous overpainting particularly within the dark background.

The substantial associated gilt frame has undergone historic alterations and repairs together with more recent restoration and overpainting. It is not represented as demonstrably original to the portrait.
