Introduction
An intriguing signed and dated British oil painting by Diana Douglas-Hamilton (1932-2019), depicting a woman traditionally identified as Camilla Parker Bowles, now Queen Camilla, within an extensive rural landscape.
Executed in 2002, the painting belongs to Douglas-Hamilton's mature later career and combines portraiture with subjects central to her artistic practice, including horses, livestock and British country life.
The sitter stands full length in informal country clothing immediately behind a substantial haltered ram. The animal dominates the foreground and is treated with considerable descriptive attention.
Beyond them, sheep occupy the pasture, while two horses and a dark pony stand to the right. Agricultural or stable buildings, mature trees and hedgerows establish the broader rural setting.

Catalogue Note
Douglas-Hamilton has constructed the composition around the unusually prominent ram.
Placed directly before the sitter, the animal occupies much of the immediate foreground. Its pale fleece contrasts strongly with its dark face and legs, while the halter physically connects it with the woman standing behind.
The ram consequently appears to have been conceived as an important subject in its own right rather than simply as incidental livestock.
The surrounding flock of sheep recedes through the pasture, while two horses and a dark pony provide a secondary equestrian focus on the right.
The composition therefore operates simultaneously as a portrait, animal painting, equestrian subject and rural landscape.
The palette is dominated by natural greens, creams, browns and blue-grey tones, with the sitter's pink and white striped blouse providing a distinctive visual accent.
Douglas-Hamilton gives greater descriptive attention to the principal foreground subjects while treating the distant animals, architecture and vegetation more broadly.
Identification of the Sitter
The woman is traditionally identified as Camilla Parker Bowles, now Queen Camilla.
The identification is supported by visual correspondence with photographs of Camilla Parker Bowles around the period in which the painting was executed, together with the apparent age of the sitter.
Camilla was 54-55 during 2002, compatible with the apparent age of the painted woman.
The rural presentation is also contextually consistent with Camilla's association with country life and horses.
However, the identification must be distinguished from documentary proof.
Claydon Auctioneers offered the painting on 18 August 2024, Lot 1688, and described it as a farm scene with a woman, sheep and horses/ponies. Claydon did not identify the sitter as Camilla.
No contemporary commission record, artist's correspondence, exhibition catalogue or other primary documentary source naming Camilla has presently been located.
The sitter is therefore presented as a considered researched attribution rather than an independently documented fact.
Wiltshire and Ray Mill Context
Camilla Parker Bowles maintained her private Wiltshire residence at Ray Mill House near Lacock during this period.
Published descriptions of the property provide potentially relevant historical context because of its rural character and facilities associated with horses.
The buildings visible within the painting should not, however, be identified as Ray Mill House itself.
No documentary or architectural evidence has presently established that the painting was made at Ray Mill.
The possible Wiltshire connection therefore remains contextual rather than a confirmed location.
The Artist
Diana Mairi Douglas-Hamilton (1932-2019), later Diana Younger, was a British artist whose career encompassed portraiture, animal painting, equestrian subjects and sculpture.
She studied Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art between 1949 and 1953, where her teachers included Sir William Gillies and Sir William MacTaggart.
Douglas-Hamilton subsequently worked across oils, watercolours, pastels and sculpture.
Horses were an important part of both her personal and professional life, with published biographical material recording her involvement as a rider and owner and breeder of horses and ponies.
Her artistic output consequently included portraits, equestrian subjects and animal paintings.

The date at which Careys handled the work has not presently been established, and no claim is made that the firm framed it immediately following completion in 2002.
A further faint historic manufacturer's or supplier's marking is visible on the reverse of the canvas but is not sufficiently legible for confident identification.
