Item Description

Original Ralston Gudgeon RSW Watercolour of a Redwing in Flight | Scottish Wildlife Bird Painting

DESCRIPTION

An original mid-20th century watercolour on paper by the celebrated Scottish wildlife artist Ralston Gudgeon RSW (1910–1984), depicting a redwing captured in mid-flight as it prepares to land on a branch.

Executed with great sensitivity and precision, the work beautifully conveys both the elegance and movement of this migratory thrush. Presented beneath protective glass in its original gilt wooden frame, it is a fine example of British wildlife art.

COMPOSITION AND TECHNIQUE

This accomplished ornithological study demonstrates Gudgeon’s exceptional ability to combine careful natural observation with expressive artistic technique. The redwing is rendered with remarkable accuracy, its distinctive cream eyebrow stripe and warm orange-red flanks picked out in delicate washes and confident brushwork.

The composition is elegantly balanced, capturing a fleeting moment in nature, while the soft background ensures the bird remains the clear focal point.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Painted during the mid-20th century, this work reflects the increasing appreciation for British wildlife painting during the period. The redwing (Turdus iliacus) is Britain’s smallest true thrush and is best known as a winter visitor from Scandinavia and Iceland.

Admired for its seasonal migration and distinctive markings, it has long been a favourite subject for ornithologists, birdwatchers and wildlife artists alike.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ralston Gudgeon RSW (1910–1984) was one of Scotland’s leading wildlife painters, widely admired for his highly accomplished bird and animal studies, predominantly executed in watercolour.
