Item Description

Colin Graeme, c.1880 —  Gordon Setters With Irish Red & White Gun Dogs, Oil on Winsor & Newton Board, Framed

Victorian c.1880 Hunting Dog Study — Colin Graeme, oil on Winsor & Newton board, later gilt gesso frame
Short Summary (1–2 lines for top of listing)
Late-Victorian cabinet-scale sporting portrait by Colin Graeme (British, fl.1858–1910). Half-length portrait of a Gordon Setter and an Irish Red & White Setter in a Highland moorland setting; oil on original Winsor & Newton prepared board, signed, framed.
Primary Description
A refined example of late-Victorian sporting art, this c.1880 oil on Winsor & Newton prepared board presents a paired study of a Gordon Setter and an Irish Red & White Setter. The composition restricts the view to heads and shoulders, intensifying expression and working temperament. Graeme’s handling is economical and assured: a warm mid-tone ground, translucent glazing to model form, directional brushwork to describe coat and feathering, and selective impasto to enliven the eyes and muzzle. The Highland moorland is suggested with broad, atmospheric strokes—rolling heather, distant hills and open sky—situating the sitters in authentic upland shooting country. Signed lower corner: “Colin Graeme.” Verso with Winsor & Newton prepared-panel label.

Provenance & Exhibition
• Acquired from Hartleys Auction, Yorkshire — Lot 427.
• Formerly in a private Yorkshire vendor collection.
• Curated and catalogued by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD.
• Exhibited: Victorian Sporting Art: Dogs, Field, and Country Life, Famous Lord Hill Museum, January 2026.

Full condition report and high-resolution images available upon request.
