Item Description
An elegant wrought iron armillary sphere with copper numerical band, mid-20th century. The surface is overpainted in successive layers — the final black coat now softened with areas of earlier colours showing through, giving it an attractive, timeworn character.
It is mounted on an English Victorian stone column pedestal, sectional in form with carved detail, and further raised on a hand-chiseled stone block base. The stone bears natural weathering with lichens and mosses, enriching its surface and lending a sense of age and permanence.
Armillary spheres, devised as models of the heavens, became popular garden ornaments from the Georgian period onwards. This example combines classical form with layered surface history and a substantial stone support, creating a complete, ready-to-place focal point for garden or courtyard settings.
