Item Description
Beautiful mid 19th.c. French secretaire abattant or writing bureau in burr walnut c.1840. Open the fall to form a good sized desk (height 31") with a red leather and gilt tooled writing surface, held steady on curving pierced brass brackets. Fitted interior in birdseye maple veneers featuring an open bookshelf over six small drawers with turned wooden knobs plus two secret compartments. Original grey marble top with a moulded edge, a frieze drawer above the bureau and three more drawers below, plus a forth drawer hidden in the plinth. Highly figured burr veneers arranged in a symmetrical pattern across the fall and drawer fronts with inlaid brass escutcheons. Walnut veneered sides. Raised on a moulded plinth and shaped fee. Oak drawer linings and back panels. Excellent condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops. Note the original locks, keys supplied.
