Item Description
Large Irish landscape painting in oil on canvas 'The End of an October Day' by A.C Michelmore c.1898. An interesting composition featuring a pastoral foreground of grazing sheep beside a stream shaded by trees in their autumn leaf. Whist the background features moorland hills lit with bright evening sunshine at the foot of which are several small towns with tall smoking mill chimneys - rather an unusual feature for art from the period which usually preferred to ignore signs of modern industry. Signed in the lower left hand corner of the canvas.
Original paper label to the rear for the 1898 exhibition of the Dublin Sketching Club (founded in 1874 and still in existence as the Dublin Painting & Sketching Club) featuring the artist's name and address, the title of the picture and a price of £20.0.0. Interestingly the address given is Clongowes Wood, a boarding school near Sallins in County Kildare, just East of Dublin. Clongowes Wood is famously the school attended by the author James Joyce (between 1888-1891) and features in his semi-autobiographical first novel The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
Some old repairs to the back of the canvas. Otherwise good condition, presented unframed on the original stretcher.
