Item Description
Large oil painting of the death of King Louis XII of France after the original by the acclaimed French history painter Merry-Joseph Blondel (1781-1853) c.1900. The King lies dying in a bed surrounded with drapes carrying the Fleur de Lis emblem of French royalty, with his crown and the Main de Justice sceptre by his side. With the help of a priest he bestows his blessing on a young prince, presumably his successor Francis I, whilst other grieving knights and noblemen stand at the foot of the bed. In the background, below Gothic arches, stand a group of grieving women and the common people, their hands raised in prayer for a popular king known as 'The Father of the People'. Well painted in oil on canvas. With some areas of damage but all away from the faces. Presented in the original giltwood and gesso frame which is in good condition.
Blondel won a gold medal at the 1817 Louvre Salon exhibition for his original version of this painting which is now to be found in the collection of the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse.
