Item Description
Of dainty proportions, the high Victorian period ebonised and parcel gilt console table, of aesthetic movement influence, having a later white marble shaped top, to a stiff leaf decorated frieze, the leg with central crest and fluted tapering leg to an acanthus leaf foot, the whole surviving from the first quarter of nineteenth century England.
The table is in fair condition with some of it having been re-touched and some losses to the leg itself with a section of the round missing, whilst there are flecks of losses and chips to the composition; please see the photographs for a visual reference. Suffice to say the white marble top is later but fits perfectly and presents well. There are two brackets for affixing to the wall.
Console tables such as this one were designed to sit flush against a wall. They came into use during the first decade of the nineteenth century and their designs were heavily influenced by archaeological discoveries. English tables would generally have a platform below the legs whereas the Irish equivalent are often made without the platform bases.
Although presented in somewhat chequered condition, this piece therefore proves good value and remains quite hard to find in this form; perfect for an entrance hallway.
