Item Description

The good quality rosewood side table having a crossbanded edged top to a compartmentalised frieze drawer with brass escutcheon and mounts, to a very well-turned ebonised lower carcass with tapering tulip reeded legs, the whole decorated to all sides, and surviving from the late Regency to early William IV period.

The table is structurally sound though a little tired. The top has some bend to it to one flank with some small losses and old scratches to the polish. The crossbanded edge is in good condition all round with only minor insignificant stress fracture and the drawer runs smoothly. The bottom edge beading has a loss to the right-hand rounded corner. There is another loss to the rear left hand rounded corner and the left-hand side return. The front legs are in generally good condition with a small loss second from top leg turning. There is no evidence of any woodworm and she stands well and true.

This table shows the early influence of the William IV period transitioning from the Regency. It is particularly well-made and would have been extremely expensive at the time. It has the advantage that it can be positioned centrally seeing as it is decorated to all sides.

A very striking and handsome table, somehow both masculine and feminine and beautifully proportioned and realised.
