Item Description
The well rendered half-length portrait in rectangular form of a high Victorian lady, painted in oils on canvas to a dark green ground, wearing a satin dress with lace collar and a drop earring, being in her thirties, her affable face looking out to the viewer with green eyes and rosy cheeks, her hair tied up and very much of the period with red satin to the background, the work unframed and surviving from the third quarter of nineteenth century England.
She remains in completely original condition with no over-painting and a good deal of craquelure to the surface with very small flecked losses especially to the lower edge as photographed. The paint surface has taken on a wonderful patina to it and there has been no attempt to restore the picture though she may have been cleaned at some stage in the last decade. Obviously once framed as the sight is clear. Some of the edges have fraying and there are a handful of small punctures. Verso there are no stamps, with chalk lettering of A35 and Lot 89.
The sitter is obviously of a high station and her clothing is expensive and luxurious.
A portrait of good size and decorative verve by a better than average hand.
