Item Description
The very attractive black painted cast strap wrought iron two-seater garden bench, having beautifully scrolled arms and feet to a curved back and slated seat, the whole surviving from Regency period England.
This bench remains all original, which give this piece its charm with the right amount of patina being in original antique condition and of beautiful proportions. There are no breakages or repairs and there is a fair amount of garden lichen deposits as photographed.
The influences on Regency design and taste were legion; from Sheraton’s neoclassicism, Henry Holland’s Anglo-French taste, the Greek revival of Thomas Hope, and the Chinoiserie favoured by the Prince Regent, to an interest in the Gothic, Old English and rustic. The Regency attitude to interior decoration often involved treating each room as a unit with individual furnishings and wall decorations in harmony of theme or colour scheme.
Timeless and highly sculptural design for any period garden worth its salt.
