Item Description

A carved 19th century wooden panel, very likely a surviving fragment from a traditional Dutch farm cart. The elongated shape, rustic hand-carving, and remnants of paint align with the decorative sideboards and valances once used on carts throughout the Netherlands and the Low Countries.

At the centre, two prancing horses appear in low relief, framed by scrolling foliate motifs highlighted with traces of their original green and red pigments. Horses were a favoured symbol in Dutch folk art—representing vitality and prosperity—making them a fitting motif for agricultural wagon decoration.
