Item Description

A hand-forged wrought iron hearth footman dating to around the turn of the 19th century, the slatted rectangular top with lapped frame joints, united by a central hand-peened transverse spine and raised on six baluster legs, the whole displaying a rich, dark graphite patinated finish.

Built to support heavy iron vessels directly before large country-house open fires, the rare six-legged architecture and fully riveted spine reflect heavy-gauge Georgian blacksmithing at its finest. Its low, broad footprint makes it physically ideal as a hearth stand within an open fireplace recess, or as a low floor stand for heavyweight planter urns.

Very good antique condition, exhibiting authentic pitting and oxidation to the iron surfaces consistent with age and hearth exposure. Structurally solid with all hand-set rivets tight and secure, clean and ready to place.

English, circa 1800.
