Item Description
A late 19th century solid mahogany tripod wine table, the removable circular top with an integral hand-carved floral border, set over an architectural fluted column above an acanthus-carved urn knop and floral rosette collar, all raised on splayed cabriole tripod legs with deeply carved acanthus knees and carved feet.
The top secures to the column via a turned, grooved spigot that inserts into a central socket beneath the cross-batten of the tabletop, locking firmly into place as twin hand-marked wooden key pegs slide horizontally through the batten to engage the spigot's grooves.
Built during the height of the late Victorian Chippendale Revival, the table demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship through its high-grade relief carving, while its unusual detachable top reflects the bespoke engineering of elite 19th century London workshops.
Very good antique condition, showing rich surface colour and a desirable patina, with a stable, natural shrinkage line to the top, held completely secure by the original underside cross-batten. Structurally sound, mechanically complete and ready to place in the home.
English, circa 1890.
