Item Description
Baktiar carpets, woven in Northwest Persia, are well known as among the most distinct, and thus highly sought after, Persian weavings, thanks to their unique combination of the playful, geometric designs of nomadic and tribal rugs, and the scale and high-quality craftsmanship one would expect of a Persian workshop piece.
Unlike most Baktiar carpets, however, this highly unusual c. 1890-1910 example features a wonderfully dynamic floral design, inspired by European Bessarabian weavings of the same era, rather than the more traditional Persian forms. Being an earlier piece, it is expertly woven with high-grade vegetable dyes and lustrous wool, lending a rich spontaneity to its composition. Its colours a diverse palette of coral reds, lush greens, cornflower blues, and more.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, its colours have taken on a mellow patina with age, with its outer borders preserved on all sides.
A characterful, and highly collectable weaving, which would complement a variety of interior styles. Among the most individual and excting exmaples of its type we have had the pleasure of adding to our collection in some time.
