Item Description
‘North West’ refers to a myriad group of villages with weaving styles borrowed from a wide range of influences from the surrounding regions, particularly Turkey and the Caucasus, and often including unique, tribal interpretations of sophisticated workshop weavings from further south. This particular example comes from the Kurdish people who inhabit this region, whose weavings are known for their expressive, charming naivety.
A beautiful c.1900 North West Persian runner with a rare all-over drawing, with a pattern repeated in a creative variety of fresh vegetable dyed colours across an uncommon ivory ground - as opposed to the more conventional medallion design, usually in deep navy blue and red tones. The central field is framed by a good number of individual borders, adding great depth and character to the rug. Its composition has a rare sense of sophisticated simplicity, not found in later weavings.
In very good condition with gracefully aged natural dyed colours - its outer borders on all sides are fully retained.
A unique and handsome tribal example, to add character and style to any interior.
