Item Description
An extraordinary pair of 18th century Stockholm made Gustavian period armchairs in their original paint with wonderful Royal provenance. Featuring scrolling Guilloché carvings to the arms & frame, shaped & fluted legs with florette motif carvings and newly re-upholstered in natural linen. Swedish circa 1780.
Provenance
Sourced from the Grand Villa Sirishov on the Royal island of Djurgården in Stockholm. Sirishov was owned at the time of the armchairs making, by Sten Abraham Piper, the Lord Chamberlain of the Royal Household of King Gustav III (1746 - 1792). When Sten passed away, the castle was gifted to Countess Aurora Wetterstedt. On her passing the house and its contents were bequeathed to King Gustav IV Adolph (1778 - 1837) and the property remained in Royal ownership under King Karl XIV Johan (1763 - 1844), King Oscar I (1799 - 1859) and Queen Josefina (1807 - 1876).
In 1866, Sirishov was purchased from the Royal family by André Oscar Wallenberg (1816 - 1886), an eminent Swedish banker, industrialist, naval officer, and newspaper tycoon who founded the Enskilda Bank. Upon his death in 1886, it was inherited by his daughter Countess Sigrid Oxenstierna af Korsholm och Wasa. Since then, Sirishov has remained within the same family up to the present day.
