Holland in Lincolnshire is from Old English hoiland, where the hoi is probably from a Brittonic-language term meaning "swamp"
Prior to about 1803, New Holland was essentially a minor creek within Barrow upon Humber parish.
A ferry service, initially a small operation, started around 1803, leading to the area becoming known as New Holland.
