Item Description
A 19th century serpentine Chesterfield sofa, circa 1870, in the style of Howard & Sons.
The sofa has a particularly good low, broad form, with a gently serpentine back and sweeping scroll arms. The shape closely relates to early Chesterfield sofas produced by Howard & Sons during the mid-19th century, although no maker’s marks have been found and we would not attribute the sofa directly to the firm.
Raised on turned hardwood front legs retaining remnants of their original gilded finish, with the wear to the gilding left untouched. The sofa retains its original gilt brass & porcelain Cope castor wheels.
Traditionally constructed, with a sprung seat, sprung front edge and horsehair fillings. The frame is firm and sturdy and the sofa is currently stripped and offered for reupholstery. The exposed frame is a pale hardwood, possibly oak. There are traces of historic woodworm to one small area of the frame, which isnt of concern to us and has been treated.
A very good quality Victorian sofa with generous proportions, strong original details and a particularly attractive early Chesterfield form.
