Item Description
A stunning hand woven Tibetan Tiger rug, dating to the 1950's this hand woven wool rug is often imitated, but never equaled, An iconic piece of Eastern design and craftmanship, this original Tibetan rug, hand woven by artisans, usually in monasteries and homes.
These rugs were a unique cultural product of the Tibetan Plateau, reflecting the region's artistic heritage and spiritual traditions. While the exact locations of their creation within Tibet are not precisely documented, their production was a significant part of the region's rug industry. These ‘Flayed Tiger Skin Rugs’ were utilized by Tibetan lamas as sitting mats, symbolizing the taming of the ego-centered mind in Buddhist philosophy. It is believed that these rugs replaced actual tiger skins once used in Tibet.
This is an original early rug so does show signs of wear, some small losses and marks of use from the decades it has been adorning fashionable floors, so would probably benefit from a professional clean.
A beautiful and rare example of this type of Tibetan craft.
