Item Description
An Interesting Late 18th Century Mahogany Flap Side Table.
This fine piece of furniture was conceived very much in the Sheraton taste c.1790. The piece features two small drawers to the front but it is the flap to the back which is very unusual indeed and makes the piece useful in a variety of different scenarios. Tables of this sort are typically known as flap tables and are unusual. Pieces with flaps to the sides, known as drop leaf tables, are frequently encountered but tables of this sort are much less common. The flap is supported on two lopers that come out of the back of the frame - something of a variation on the construction of a Pembroke table. This type of table can be stored flat against a wall, taking up very little space, and can then be employed for occasional use when necessary. This is particularly useful in the modern home.
The mahogany employed throughout this table is of exceptionally fine figure. The table relies upon the ebony stringing around the drawers and frieze, and the fine gilded brass handles for its decorative impact. Standing on wonderful original brass castors.
This is a very practical piece of furniture with lovely clean lines, elegant proportions, beautiful colour and patination.
