Item Description
An 18th Century Italian Burr Mulberry Kneehole Desk with Tooled Leather Top.
This fine desk combines beautiful burr timbers with ebonised mouldings for a very sophisticated and quite contemporary look. The top incorporates a fine inset leather with gilt tooled edge. In the pedestals are two banks of five drawers and a central drawer of larger size sits above the kneehole. The drawers all retain their original ormolu escutcheon plates.
Each drawer front consists of a wide crossbanding flanking a central panel of burr timber of excellent colour and figure which looks rather like tortoiseshell. These central panels are surrounded by narrow bands of stringing. The desk sits on four ebonised bun feet with sophisticated leaf carved detailing. The sides of the piece consist of burr panels with very wide crossbanding around them, again flanked by ebonised sections.
