Item Description
A Highly Decorative Edwardian Japanned Armchair in the George I Taste c.1910.
This very striking chair was made around 1910 and incorporates many features associated with the finest chairs of the Queen Anne and George I periods. The curved shepherd's crook arms, the vase splat back and the refined claw and ball front feet all draw their inspiration from that period of English furniture design. The chair is japanned, painted in imitation of lacquer work. The design is inspired by the work of makers such as Giles Grendey, from the aforementioned periods but also, in details like the humorously-rendered dragon on the front rail, also regency or Brighton Pavilion period.
The finish has aged beautifully, and the mellow colour of the gilded areas is very attractive. Some of the japanning is in high relief, just as seen on period pieces of the highest quality, and the chair stands beautifully.
