This is an antique chef's knife board. A Scottish, leather and pine blade sharpener and cleaner, dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1890.
A fascinating chef or butcher's knife board, used for cleaning and sharpening
Displays a desirable aged patina, with a gently time-worn appearance
Pine frame presents deep caramel hues and fine grain interest
Dark tanned leather cushion bears original blade marks from use
Domed top dressed with a cast iron plate, bearing the maker's name J & A McFarlane
This particular model is the Albert Knife Board, named for Queen Victoria's husband
In period, abrasive powder would be placed upon the leather cushion to remove tarnish
Before the advent of stainless steel, such boards helped retain sharp edges and clean surfaces
Hanging loop within the domed plate ideal for wall mounting or display
