Item Description
A beautiful Louis XV period mirror of exceptional scale and in wonderful original condition.
Of impressive scale, the arched divided plate within a finely carved giltwood frame richly ornamented with scrolling acanthus, rocailles and trailing foliage, surmounted by an openwork cresting centred by a stylised floral plume. The sides carved with flowerhead clasps and voluted scrolls, the lower edge with pierced rocaille cartouche motifs. The original gilt surface now with an attractive, softly burnished patina and areas of age-consistent wear. The mirror plates showing desirable atmospheric foxing to the outer slips and a clearer central plate, characteristic of period mercury silvering.
This elegant and highly decorative mirror exemplifies the refined carving and exuberant asymmetry associated with late Louis XV interiors. Its impressive proportions and richly sculptural ornamentation reflect the sophistication of French craftsmanship in the latter half of the 18th century.
