Item Description

Pair of Regency mahogany hall chairs.
Each with a pierced splat painted with a harp, the heraldic emblem of Ireland. Tapering seats, on square supports terminate in peg feet. They are stamped with maker's initials 'IR' beneath. Circa 1825.
Provenance: Sir James Matheson, a founding member of Jardine Matheson, the Hong Kong based trading company which began shipping tea from China to Great Britain in 1834. He bought the Isle of Lewis and built Lews Castle at Stornoway, for which these chairs were commissioned.
