Item Description
An excellent 19th century micro mosaic copper panel/plaque
depicting The Pantheon, Rome
The mosaic is on a copper base with micro pieces of glass a process called tesserae.
Using hundreds of micro pieces of glass in multiple colours and shades the Italian artists formed a picture in mosaic form.
These were then sold to Victorian grand tour visitors to Italy. This particular grand tour mosaic is of the pantheon in Rome.
The Pantheon is the best-preserved ancient Roman monument, originally a temple to all the gods, and now a Catholic church known as the Basilica of St. Mary and the Martyrs. Built by Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD
