Item Description

A glazed case diorama of the Beeswing cargo ship flanked by two tug boats. A lovely model of a ship with great provenance.

Beeswing was a 1,462-ton steel barque built by Russell & Co. in Greenock, Scotland, and launched in 1893. She was initially owned by the Beeswing Sailing Ship co. and used for general cargo, frequently trading with ports in Brazil and Australia. On May 2 1917, while carrying a cargo of timber from Pensacola, Florida to Liverpool, the ship was captured and sunk by gunfire from the German submarine U-58. Most of the crew survived and spent several days in lifeboats before reaching land near Cork, Ireland. This model of Beeswing was made by the ship's carpenter for a fellow seaman.
