Item Description

An entrancing mid-20th century oil on canvas landscape painting by the Swedish artist Brita von Sydow-Södöö (1884–1959). The subject matter appears to be a view from a window of the sprawling roof tops and chimneys of a city. The painting is beautifully composed with industrial chimney stacks framing the lower buildings in the scene, and providing perspective to the picture. The colour palette of mauves and purples in the distance, and the use of warmer hues in the foreground also add to its visual depth and intrigue. The painting is in lovely condition, and ready to hang.

Brita von Sydow-Södöö was born in 1884 in Jönköping in Sweden. She studied at the Higher School of Industrial Arts, and at Wilhelmson's Painting School in Stockholm (set up by the well-known Swedish artist Carl Wilhelmson, 1866–1928). Brita also made study trips to Paris, England and Italy. In 1910 she married Gustaf Södöö, and combined her surname with his as her signature. She exhibited all over Sweden, including at the famous 'Modern Art in the Home' gallery in Stockholm. She died in Karlskrona in 1959.
