Item Description
A rare and almost certainly unique 19th century castle decanter. Possibly Scottish. Circa 1870.
The outer is made from plaster of Paris, with detailed texture, having wooden hand-painted lancet arched windows and front door, and featuring a central clock face and medieval crenulations. The exterior is in remarkably good condition, left untouched.
The interior boasts leather dividers enclosing four square decanters with cut glass stoppers. The inner edging is veneered in Coromandel wood, with the rest of the interior covered in blue velvet. Opening the castle reveals a family crest plaque affixed to the inside of the lid, which could suggest it was made by a local artisan for the family.
The interior does show wear to all surfaces - obviously a much enjoyed set! There is no key for the lock, and the lock appears damaged, but the lid opens and closes well. Some of the pieces of veneer appear to have been reset.
The glass decanters have been cleaned and ready for use. There are nibbles around the decanters, and a chip to one at the stem. Please refer to the photographs.
The decanter is 44cm deep when opened.
