Item Description

Fine Edwardian walnut floor-standing three-fold screen room divider. Circa 1900.

The elegant screen is of superb quality, set on heavy brass double acting hinges allowing each panel to articulate smoothly in both directions. The craftsmanship is exceptional throughout.

The central panel with an arched pediment has astragal‑glazed panels incorporating both mirrored and clear glass. This is flanked by two shaped top panels. The screen has a solid walnut frame, with decorative herringbone and boxwood inlay designs forming geometric borders. All in quartersawn figured walnut veneers, with the central door having a book match design. Standing on squat shaped legs, making the screen usable in any position.

The quality and design would suggest manufacture from the Scottish firm of Whytock & Reid.

The screen is in very good original condition with a good patina, and a nice mellow shine. There are some light marks consistent with its age, and a small knock to the top edge as shown. To one side, one mirror shows oxidation and there is some light foxing to the other three. The other side does not have the oxidation mark. The underside to one leg shows a historic filled hole (please refer to the photographs) presumably to strengthen. This leg is very solid and sound.
