Item Description
Liberty & Co Arts & Crafts ash bureau writing desk. Circa 1895. Labelled.
Retaining the red Liberty & Co paper label to the inside drawer. This design is also illustrated in Daryl Bennett's 'Liberty's Furniture' in figure 5.32 on page 173. Dated 1895.
The top having crenelation-type uprights with open design for books or display. The closed bureau lid has a book rest. The interior with pigeon hole compartments. The drawer has the original copper handles, and the drawer pulls out to hold the bureau lid in situ. This is very sturdy when in use. The sides having geometric cut out decorations reminiscent of Liberty’s early Moorish Medina range. The simple design of the writing desk is also in the Mission manner.
Constructed in solid ash throughout, it is in very good condition. Having the original patina, there are some knocks in places, a sliver missing from the bottom right hand side end. The frame edge near the bureau lid to the right hand side has worn slightly, probably from being opened. Please refer to the photographs. I have added a key to aid with opening, although the key does not work the lock.
Lid when open is 68.5 cm high (58cm space beneath the drawer)
