Item Description
Wickwar London Victorian red leather chamfered top Investiture Box with gold leaf tooled decoration and the embossed British Royal Coat of Arms. Circa 1880.
Accompanying the box is a letter to Sir William Thomas Charley, KC, a British judge and Conservative Party politician (5 March 1833 – 8 July 1904).
The letter is sent from the Treasurer's Office, Inner Temple, 1883 (the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, commonly known as the Inner Temple, is one of the four Inns of Court and is a professional association for barristers and judges). The letter reads:
"Sir, in compliance with the orders of the house I beg leave herewith to return the Patent which you forwarded to this office, and by which you are constituted one of Her Majesty's Counsel, and at the same time to inform you that an entry to that effect has been duly made in the Books of this society."
Also present in the box is a delightful letter from Sir Charley as a child, writing to his 'mama' from boarding school.
The box has the usual signs of use as expected, but overall is in good condition. Please refer to the photographs. The lid open and closes well. There is no key for the lock.
The interior is lined in red velvet with raised sides, and stamped with the maker's name & address in gilt. The interior is in very good condition. A slight mark to the top left hand side to note.
