The composition presents the historic architecture of Sant Cugat rising beyond a tree-lined public space, with small groups of figures animating the foreground. Gutiérrez Maestro reduces the architecture, trees and figures to broad, spontaneous passages of colour, creating a lively interpretation of the town rather than a strictly topographical view.

The painting is particularly distinguished by its strong palette of turquoise, blue, emerald green, violet, pink and ochre. Loose, energetic brushwork and simplified forms give the work an expressive, almost semi-abstract quality while retaining a clearly recognisable sense of place.

Gutiérrez Maestro was particularly associated with landscape painting and developed a highly personal approach characterised by vigorous brushwork, strong colour and an interest in light. These qualities are clearly evident here, particularly in the juxtaposition of the cool blue-green foliage with the warmer pink and violet architecture.

Importantly, the reverse of the canvas is inscribed “SANT CUGAT del VALLÈS”, confirming the location depicted. It is also marked “Nº 12-N” and bears the artist's handwritten identification and former Manresa address:

Artist Details
Àngel Gutiérrez Maestro was born in Sant Pere Sallavinera, Catalonia, in 1921, and later moved with his family to Manresa, the city with which his artistic career became closely associated.

He studied under the Manresa painter Evarist Basiana, attended the Escola d'Arts i Oficis in Manresa and subsequently studied at the Escola de Belles Arts in Barcelona. His artistic education also took him to France, where he exhibited at regional artists' salons.

Gutiérrez Maestro became known particularly for landscapes painted with a rapid and spontaneous technique. Rather than pursuing detailed academic realism, he increasingly simplified his subjects into areas of intense colour, concentrating on light, atmosphere and the relationships between complementary colours.

He exhibited from the late 1930s onwards and held his first solo exhibition at Sala Vergé in Manresa in 1946. He subsequently participated in numerous exhibitions, salons and competitions in Catalonia and received the Gold Medal of the Cercle Artístic de Manresa.

His works are held in private collections in Spain and internationally, while examples of his work are also represented in the collection of the Museu de Manresa.

He died in 1988. A posthumous exhibition dedicated to his work was held in Manresa the following year.

The painting shows affinities with the broader development of Fauvist and Post-Impressionist colour, particularly in its use of non-naturalistic violet, turquoise, pink and green and its reduction of buildings, foliage and figures into strongly defined areas of colour.

Rather than attempting precise architectural description, Gutiérrez Maestro uses the townscape as the framework for an exploration of colour, light and painterly rhythm.

These surviving inscriptions provide useful documentary evidence connecting the painting directly with both Àngel Gutiérrez Maestro and the depicted location.

Condition
The painting presents well overall, with age-related wear consistent with a vintage work. The canvas remains mounted on its wooden stretcher and retains the historic handwritten inscriptions to the reverse.

Frame Condition
Presented in a decorative painted and gilt wooden frame with a pale inner slip. The frame displays minor age-related wear and patination consistent with its age.
