Item Description

An original painted metal advertising sign reputedly from the Hitchin workshop of Omersa, famed for their distinctive leather animals notably supplied to Liberty since the early C20th.

Dimitri Omersa, a Yugoslavian immigrant, moved to England following WWII, working in the leather trade and taking over an existing business in 1958.

The business already had an established relationship with Liberty, the famous London department store, having supplied leather pigs since the 1920’s.

Under the Omersa name, Dimitri set up new workshops in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, and expanded the range animals.

This heavy gauge steel sign, cut in the distinctive rhino shape that remains the company’s logo today, represents an iconic piece of British design history.
