Item Description
Antique French Louis-Philippe period (1830-48) archtop mirror with wide, partly outcurving, etched gilt frame decorated with a leaf and twisted stem design and with fanned acanthus leaves etched into each of the lower corners. After the design is cut into the gesso layer of the frame and the gold leaf is applied, the gold leaf is burnished within the design, which makes it stand out from the matt gold surround. After more than 200 years of dusting, the gilding has thinned a little allowing the terracotta bole to add warmth to the frame which has an attractive patina. A row of beading runs around the sight edge (closest to the glass) and the central, mercury glass has a little age towards the lower centre but sparkles beautifully along the base and where it catches the light and gives an excellent reflection.
